Library Accessibility

The Lawrence W. Tyree Library at Santa Fe College is committed to providing equitable access to library materials, programs, and services to all patrons. The Library is located in Building Y on the Northwest Campus. Please also see the Northwest Campus Accessibility Map.

All Santa Fe College students with disabilities are encouraged to register with the Disabilities Resource Center (DRC). Faculty and staff with disabilities may request official accommodations from the Equal Opportunity Officer and Title IX Coordinator. Users with disabilities are encouraged to ask library staff members for assistance or accommodation in using any library services. All staff working in public service areas of the Library will accommodate any reasonable request from a patron with a disability.

If more assistance is needed than can be provided on demand, an appointment of extended service should be arranged by contacting Diana Matthews (Y-227) at 352-395-5408 or the Reference Desk at 352-395-5409.

Service Animals

As set forth in College Procedure 6.5P and defined by the ADAAA and ยง413.081, F.S., service animals, but not emotional support animals, are welcome in the Library without prior approval or authorization.

Students who experience an adverse reaction such as fear or allergy, because of regularly scheduled contact with another individual's service animal should contact the Disabilities Resource Center (DRC) at 3000 NW 83rd Street, building S, Room 229 Gainesville, FL 32606; Voice/TTY 352-395-4400; Fax 352-395-4100.

Physical Accessibility

The library building (located in Building Y on the Northwest Campus) is wheelchair accessible. There are eight handicapped parking spaces in the parking lot directly east of the Library. A wheelchair ramp provides access into the building, and a mechanically operated entrance/exit door is available. The number 43 bus passes close to the Library via 83rd Street. Santa Fe College students can ride the RTS bus system for free with their SFID card, and there are ADA services available.

There are two elevators providing access to all three floors of the Library. Each floor has wheel-chair accessible restroom stalls, water fountains, and bottle fillers. The first floor restrooms have electronic door openers. All service desks have low counter heights. The third floor is equipped with a Garaventa Evacu-Trac to aid in evacuating users in the case of an emergency.

Physical Spaces

A wide variety of seating and study options are available throughout the Library's three floors. Adjustable tables are available on the second and third floor, and there is a computer on an adjustable table on the second floor, outside of Y-207. Reservable study rooms are available on the first and second floors. The third floor is a designated quiet floor, and talking is discouraged. Book stack aisles are at least 36" wide and are wider in some areas. Sensory kits are available to use within the building at the first floor Circulation Desk.

Reference Services

Reference librarians are available whenever the Library is open for assistance with using library resources, including the online catalog and online databases, and will provide directional assistance for locating library materials. Contact the Reference Desk on the second floor of the library, by phone at 352-395-5409, or by emailing reference@sfcollege.edu. Librarians are also available for simple reference questions through the Ask a Librarian chat service. Research consultations are also available by appointment.

Librarians can work with students in a variety of locations, including at the Reference Desk, in a librarian office, or at one of the Library's assistive technology computer stations.

Library Instruction

Library instruction sessions are scheduled by instructors and usually take place in Y-203, the Library Training Room. This room includes a standing desk and a computer with a large-print keyboard and adaptive software installed. Students with disabilities who would like to request an accommodation for a scheduled library instruction session or to discuss the space or session can contact Diana Matthews at diana.matthews@sfcollege.edu or 352-395-5408.

Materials Retrieval and Proxy Borrowing

All students, staff, and faculty may request books be pulled from the third floor through the library catalog or by contacting the Library's first floor Circulation Desk in person, via email at library@sfcollege.edu, or by calling 352-395-5412. Books requested online are usually available within one business day. In-person and phone requests will be handled by library staff as soon as duties permit, usually within 30 minutes. If staffing at the desk is limited or library staff cannot assist the patron at the time of a request, the patron and library staff will mutually agree upon a time when the patron may best be assisted.

Any Santa Fe College student, staff, or faculty with a disability may authorize a proxy to borrow physical materials on their behalf. To initiate the process, fill out the SF Library Proxy Authorization Form. Proxies will need to be renewed each semester and authorization may be withdrawn upon request.

Electronic Resources

The Tyree Library has many electronic resources that can be accessed from off-campus. Over 80,000 eBooks, can be found through the library catalog, and over 90 library databases provide online access to millions of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. For instructions on how to access these resources, you may contact the Library's Reference Desk.

VPATs for Library Subscription Resources

The following VPATs have been provided by the vendors of library subscription resources. VPATs may be provided as links, PDFs, or Word documents.

Audiovisual Resources

Audiovisual Formats

The Library has many items in audiovisual formats, such as audiobooks, videos, and CDs. These materials can be searched for in the library catalog by limiting the Format after performing a search. Most audiovisual materials are available on the second floor. Videos with closed captioning and/or audio descriptions will be noted as such in the library catalog record.

Video Viewing

The second floor has two video viewing stations to play videos in VHS and DVD formats outside of Y-204. There are also attached DVD players on select computers on the first and second floors, and an external Blu-Ray player may be requested at the second floor Reference Desk.

Headphones

Headsets with microphones may be checked out at the first floor Circulation Desk or the second floor Reference Desk with an SFID card. Bose noise-canceling headphones may also be checked out at the second floor Reference Desk.

Technology

Computers

The Library has two computers with adaptive software available on the first and second floor. These computers are located on an adjustable table and include attached large-print keyboards. The first floor computer has a trackball mouse and the second floor computer has a joystick mouse.

Please ask library staff to direct you to these computers. Students registered with the Disabilities Resource Center have priority on these computers. In addition, the Library's training room, Y-203, contains one computer with adaptive software for use in library instruction sessions

Scanners

Book-edge scanners are located on the second floor of the Library. These scanners are free to use. There are options to scan to a searchable PDF or an audio file.

Printers/Copiers

All student computers use the campus-wide pay-for-print system. Print jobs may be picked up at the print release stations on the 1st and 2nd floors. The print release stations are 39" high and have a touchscreen interface. The corresponding copiers are 45" high and also use the touchscreen interface. For help using the printer or copier, please ask a staff member at the 1st floor Circulation Desk or 2nd floor Reference Desk.
